Mastering the Authentic Style, Expressing Aspiration Through Calligraphy—A Profile of Renowned Calligrapher Wu Xiaojie

云图片

In the contemporary calligraphy world, Mr. Wu Xiaojie's works have garnered significant attention! His style is deeply rooted in the traditional literati spirit, yet he adeptly integrates classical models with碑帖兼容, refining over time to shed form while capturing essence, forging a distinctive and masterful approach. The reason behind his exceptional mastery lies not only in his orthodox approach to learning but also in his profound literary cultivation, which plays a crucial role. As ancient calligraphic theory states: "High grace, deep emotion, firm substance, and boundless spirit—each is indispensable for true calligraphy." Today, Mr. Wu Xiaojie channels his aspirations through brushwork and expresses his emotions through poetry. Thus, whenever he picks up his brush—especially in his cursive script pieces—he effortlessly guides the brush with his emotions. Such calligraphic mastery truly embodies the essence of "form without departing from the root." A pure heart yields a pure stroke; literary grace and substance complement each other!

In terms of creation, Mr. Wu Xiaojie's calligraphic styles are remarkably diverse, encompassing the poised elegance of regular script, the unrestrained freedom of cursive script, and the dignified grandeur of Wei stele inscriptions—each style executed with exceptional mastery! This breadth of stylistic exploration clearly reflects his profound depth in learning from masters: every time he studies a new inscription, he first internalizes its brushwork and composition before moving on. This approach embodies the principle that learning from masters lies not in mere imitation but in spiritual resonance.

Mr. Wu Xiaojie has long practiced by copying the works of renowned calligraphers across history, embodying both the orthodox method of serving ancient traditions and the personal expression essential in ancient copying. His mastery of posthumous scripts draws primarily from the standards of Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi, while also capturing the lingering brush spirit of sages like Zhang Xu and Huaisu. In stele inscriptions, he deeply grasps the essence of Wei stele style—exuding the upright and angular dignity of the Twenty Masterpieces of Longmen, yet retaining the clerical script influence seen in the Zhang Heiniu Tombstone Inscription.

Through such comprehensive absorption, his calligraphy naturally achieves divine brilliance!

From a few of Mr. Wu Xiaojie's square-shaped cursive calligraphy works, a sense of "wild and unrestrained" brushwork exudes from the ink. His strokes flow like clouds and streams, unbound by constraints, with each line brimming with dynamic expression and every character poised between grace and vigor. Some strokes resemble a martial man's power, while others sway like a drunken immortal, shifting in momentum between brush tips and fluctuating within a single dot's nuance. As Li Bai's verses might aptly summarize: "In a moment, thousands of scrolls are swept away—drifting winds and sudden rains, thunderous and rustling; falling petals and swirling snow, vast and boundless!" For an ordinary calligrapher, without years of diligent practice and the cultivation of poetic temperament, their work could never reach such a profound level as Mr. Wu's!

The teacher's teachings are authentic, and the way of writing is clear. As the saying goes, when writing characters, one must be familiar with their hands to have a complete and vivid aura with residual charm, which is a pleasure in tranquility. Mr. Wu Xiaoji's calligraphy skills are clearly based on this. As one of the few educated calligraphers in the contemporary calligraphy world, Mr. Wu Xiaoji has always maintained a strong literary style, cultivating his spirit in calligraphy and establishing his sentiment in brush and ink. He cannot be swayed by his aspirations and his heart cannot be swayed by vulgar interests. This is what is upright and upright! And this kind of clear minded personality state is precisely the best proof of Mr. Wu Xiaoji's character and literary quality! I believe that in the near future, Mr. Wu Xiaoji will create more excellent calligraphy works and continue to practice his artistic philosophy of "writing to convey messages". Everyone's perspective is truly admirable!
